Nebraska For Us statement on tariffs for imports from Mexico, Canada, and China
“For months, Nebraska For Us has sounded the alarm on how higher tariffs would only compound the pain being felt by working class and middle income Nebraskans dealing with high prices due to inflation. Despite an attempt at clever messaging by tariff supporters, the cost added onto imported goods will be passed on to the consumer who is just trying to make it to their next paycheck.
“Expect painful price increases on gas, groceries, and everyday goods. That means inflation could increase, too, following a much healthier rate throughout 2024.
“It’s time for Congressman Don Bacon to denounce tariffs that will raise prices for his constituents as Congress prepares to consider what to do about the 2017 GOP Tax Law—especially as the president has said tariffs will be used to pay for it. Our position remains consistent—create a fairer tax code that supports hardworking Nebraskans rather than cutting benefits for and raising prices on us to give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy and large corporations.”
