NEBRASKA FOR US HONORS LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES

OMAHA, Nebraska (May 31, 2024)—To celebrate National Small Business Month, Nebraska For Us distributed nearly $10,000 in microgrants to small businesses right here in the Omaha metro. Nebraska For Us made stops at the awardees’ brick and mortar locations in Douglas, Sarpy, and Saunders Counties to celebrate.

“While current tax policy largely benefits massive corporations thanks to the 2017 tax law, small businesses are the backbone of our economy,” Nebraska For Us State Director Angie Lauritsen said. “They provide jobs, incomes, stability, goods, and services that help us in more ways than we realize. Without them, our communities would not be as strong as they are today. That’s why our elected leaders should pass tax policies that prioritize small businesses.”

According to the Small Business Administration, just under 420,000 employees work for Nebraska’s small businesses—nearly 50% of all workers statewide.

To give thanks to our area’s small businesses, Nebraska For Us stopped by several locations to present the microgrants. Recipients include:

  • Pause Coffee Shop Ralston

  • Big Mama’s Kitchen & Catering Omaha

  • Cruizin Cones Gretna

  • Before & After Remodeling Omaha

  • Lady T’s Gourmet Creations Omaha

  • Arte mi Mexico Omaha

“Receiving the Nebraska For Us small business grant allows us to better face broader market challenges while also offering the opportunity to invest in the growth and sustainability of our business,” said Jennifer Taylor, part-owner of Cruizin Cones. “While the current tax structure is heavily skewed to benefit those at the top, Congressman Don Bacon has an opportunity to change our tax policies so that they prioritize small businesses. It would have a profoundly positive impact on our community—from reducing tax burdens on businesses like ours, to providing incentives for growth and innovation.”

“We started our business to give people with developmental disabilities more opportunities for employment, including my son Matthew,” Pause Coffee Shop Owner Kelly Gray said. “Moving forward, we are working to grow our business to hire more employees facing similar circumstances.”

Nebraska For Us is a coalition of concerned Nebraskans focused on economic issues, like tax policies that affect small businesses, along with jobs, Social Security, Medicare, the cost of living, inflation, and many more. We seek to reach residents of Congressional District 2 through a range of community events and initiatives. Nebraska For Us also advocates for economic policies that benefit working class and middle income Nebraskans. For more information and updates about our work, visit nebraskaforus.org.
