Nebraska For Us statement defending National Weather Service against DOGE cuts

“As the dust settles on the blizzard that hit the metro this week, we are thankful for the hardworking professionals at the National Weather Service’s Omaha/Valley office for helping to keep Nebraskans safe. At the same time, we would be remiss not to note the erratic DOGE cuts that have affected offices across the country.

“With severe weather season right around the corner, we count on the National Weather Service, along with data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to keep us safe. From tornado warnings to severe thunderstorm watches and wind advisories, the experts tracking the conditions are incredibly valuable.

Recent reports suggest at least half of the offices across the country were already understaffed, and layoffs and firings will only make that problem worse. It is time for Congressman Don Bacon to speak out against DOGE that could cause serious impacts to data that helps forecasters do their jobs.”
