Nebraska For Us statement on announcement of extreme tariffs

“We have faced uncertainty for months over what goods and services would be more expensive because of tariffs. Now, we have more answers on what is to come in the days and weeks ahead. It is nearly impossible to overstate how sweeping these announced tariffs are. They will increase costs on a wide range of goods that Nebraskans rely on.

“Working class and middle income Nebraskans are already struggling as costs continue to rise. This move will cause them to rise even more, going directly against the president’s promise to lower prices on day one. Nebraskans will continue to struggle, while Republicans in Washington are increasing costs even more in order to help pay for more massive tax breaks for billionaires.

“Congressman Don Bacon must forcefully denounce these tariffs and take steps to rein in economically harmful actions like this one. He has already heard concerns from Nebraska business owners and farmers who have been affected. He must also vote against any tax plan that cuts benefits and raises costs for us to give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy and large corporations.”

-State Director Angie Lauritsen

“Life is getting more expensive by the day, and I am incredibly worried about how I will be able to afford the essentials as we face the reality of tariffs. The middle class is hurting, and this decision will only make that problem worse in order to pay for more tax breaks for the rich. The erratic nature of these announcements and decisions have left me worried about my own economic security, and I know I am not alone.”

-Sharon Williamson, Omaha Social Security recipient
