Nebraska For Us statement on commerce secretary’s controversial Social Security comments

“As Elon Musk’s DOGE continues disrupting key services, it is now threatening the safety of Social Security benefits, too. To top it all off, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick suggests seniors would not have any issues if Social Security payments were delayed or missed for a period of time. He is out of touch with the reality facing millions of our nation’s Social Security recipients who rely solely on those benefits to get by.

“We need a firm commitment from Congressman Don Bacon and our state’s entire federal delegation to protect and defend Social Security, especially as the DOGE team causes chaos in agency after agency. Nebraskans who live off of their earned Social Security would quickly be unable to pay their bills if benefits were delayed—even by a day.

“By voting for a continuing resolution earlier this month, Nebraska’s representatives endorsed and enabled these cuts to services instead of curtailing the harmful actions of DOGE. We need action now!”

-State Director Angie Lauritsen

“I’ve begun receiving my Social Security benefits in recent years and have witnessed fellow taxpayers losing faith in whether they will even see their benefits in the future. Unfortunately, it seems people in positions of power would like to find new ways to risk the reliability of a program we count on to stay afloat. Our lawmakers need to work harder to protect Social Security.”

-Sharon Williamson, Omaha

“I have been worried about possible cuts to Social Security for years, and now it appears Congress is threatening it again, along with DOGE. We spend decades paying into Social Security with the understanding that we will recoup the benefits upon retirement. The fact that there are people who would like to cut Social Security is unacceptable. I hope Congressman Don Bacon steps up!”

-Michael Ostblom, Yutan
