Nebraska For Us statement on massive cuts at U.S. Department of Education
“Nebraska For Us is deeply concerned about this extreme move from the Trump Administration at the U.S. Department of Education. Since the executive branch cannot close departments on its own, it is worrisome that massive job cuts are happening anyway. On Tuesday night, the education secretary admitted in an interview that this is the first step to completely eliminate the department.
“Congressional Republicans are allowing the Trump Administration and Elon Musk’s DOGE to cut public education for our kids just to fund tax breaks for billionaires and large corporations.
“Nebraskans support our schools, as proven by results on a statewide ballot initiative last November that protected funding for public education. Time and again, our neighbors and friends have done their part to defend our schools.
“Congressman Don Bacon and our entire federal delegation must stand up against yet another round of hasty cuts. This will jeopardize critical programs that help ensure student success. Do the right thing and oppose such a drastic and harmful policy decision.”
-State Director Angie Lauritsen
“As a public school teacher, I witness the benefits of the support the U.S. Department of Education offers Nebraska schools. From critical funding to policies that ensure students of all ages and backgrounds have access to a quality education, I worry what this move will mean for our area’s most vulnerable children.”
