Nebraska For Us calls on Congressman Bacon to oppose harmful benefit cuts
OMAHA, Nebraska (January 23, 2025)—Today, Nebraska For Us is calling attention to multiple reports indicating House Republicans are strongly considering a slew of budget cuts affecting working-class and lower-income Americans, including cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and the Affordable Care Act. That is in addition to tariffs that would raise prices for consumers already navigating an inflationary environment and higher interest rates.
“From cuts to Medicaid and SNAP affecting Nebraska families living paycheck to paycheck, to policy proposals that would raise prices on everyday goods, it is clear many of these suggestions would hurt those who are already struggling to afford basic essentials,” Nebraska For Us State Director Angie Lauritsen said. “The end goal of these cuts is to help pay for massive tax cuts that disproportionately benefit the ultra-wealthy and large corporations. Our position is consistent—tax policy should prioritize the working class.”
Nebraska For Us calls on Congressman Don Bacon and our entire federal delegation to stand against these proposals that would harm Nebraskans who are just trying to put food on the table.
“What is really at issue for us is why the wealthy need preferential treatment while most of us are figuring out how we will be able to afford the weekly grocery bill or gas in the car to get us to and from work,” Laurtisen noted. “Any proposals that do not put working class and middle income Nebraskans first are non-starters.”
Nebraska For Us focuses on federal economic policies that benefit working class and middle income Nebraskans. As Congress gears up for a major fight over tax policy this year, we will continue monitoring developments and sharing the perspectives of Nebraskans who are impacted by rising costs and economic policy. The time for a fairer tax code is now.
