Nebraska For Us statement on disaster relief hold-up in Congress
“It is unimaginable for members of Congress to consider withholding desperately needed aid to Californians as a negotiating tactic to accomplish unrelated political goals. In 2024, Nebraska experienced a litany of severe weather events—from tornadoes in the spring to hail storms in the summer and hurricane-strength winds on top of extreme rainfall events.
“It is difficult to fathom the betrayal Nebraskans would have felt following those disasters last year if their suffering was used as a bargaining chip to force other policies through. Congressman Don Bacon and our entire federal delegation should put hardworking families first instead of putting those who need help now at risk in order to pass more tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy.
“This comes on top of suggested cuts to programs like SNAP, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and others that would hurt the working class to fund tax breaks that disproportionately enrich those at the top. The time to put hardworking families first with a fairer tax code is now!”
