Nebraska For Us responds to Congressman Don Bacon's admission budget plan will cut Medicaid

OMAHA, Nebraska (February 28, 2025)—Today, Nebraska For Us is responding to Congressman Don Bacon’s Thursday interview with C-SPAN where he admitted Medicaid will be cut under House Republicans’ plans. Earlier in the week, he used his Congressional X account to accuse a user of engaging in “hysteria” when expressing concerns about Medicaid cuts.

  • Host: “Which means there will be cuts to Medicaid?”

  • Congressman Don Bacon: “Yeah”

“Under the plan that Congressman Don Bacon and his Republican colleagues voted to advance earlier this week, hundreds of billions of dollars would need to be cut from Medicaid,” Nebraska For Us State Director Angie Lauritsen said. “We know that and Congressman  Bacon knows that. Ripping benefits away from those who need it most to finance massive tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations is inexcusable. He has the power to stop this.”

More than 350,000 Nebraskans rely on Medicaid for their health care needs. That figure includes two in seven children across the state, including Rep. Bacon’s district. Cuts to this program would put vulnerable families in a more difficult position, taking away health coverage and making it even harder to make ends meet.

Medicaid is not the only vital assistance in serious danger. Congressman Don Bacon is a member of the House Committee on Agriculture, which is responsible for SNAP funding and is poised to vote on massive cuts to the program in the coming weeks thanks to Republicans’ budget plan. Approximately 155,000 working class Nebraskans rely on SNAP to put food on the table. For months, Nebraska For Us and other area organizations have been sounding the alarm about food insecurity in the metro area.

Nebraska For Us focuses on federal economic policies that benefit working class and middle income Nebraskans, specifically this ongoing tax fight. In the months ahead, we will continue holding community events to raise more awareness and encourage members of the public to engage with their federal representatives.
